    Grolsch-style flip top bottles

I have a bunch of Liter bottles with the flip top on them. I've used them a couple times, and love them on Bottling day: they are much faster than 12oz bottles. However, I believe I am wearing out the little rubber grommets. Is there a easy place to pick these up? I haven't been able to find...

    explosive fermentation

I have been using a blow off tube in my primaries (not to hijack this thread) but I don't think it is wide enough. I just did a coffee stout from 4#'s of LME, 6#'s of DME, and a now unknown yeast, (was a liquid, bring to room temp, shake and pitch at 70-75F). I had a blow off tube and it...

    Success! I think...

I know I am SUPPOSED to take readings, but... I have nailed most of my problems to temp so far. Plus I have only done extracts to this point. Though, it would be nice to know the alcohol content of my brews. I have even had a hydro from the word go, and just never used it. Damn, I guess...

1st day ferment temp 80..move it, or will it shock the yeast?

Yes, I agree with the blow-off tubes for Primary. Even so, I still get explosions every now and again. And yes, I agree it may be too late for this batch. I had similar problems with my first couple batches. I ended up using a wet towel and a fan to cool off the primary. Now I have a nice...

    First "Good" Batch...

The temp thing is right on. I think about it now, my first attempts were in a thrid floor, Heat-and-hot-water included apartment. Couldn't turn the heat below 75F. Had eventually to wrap a wet towel with a fan on around the primary. But now I have a nice cool basement with a nice steady 60F...

    First "Good" Batch...

I put a batch of (yes I know it's late) Oktoberfest into a carboy as a secondary and tasted a little of it while waiting for the Primary bucket to drain. Tasted actually pretty good. Which is a first for me. The primary to secondary has alwasy tasted nasty to me, usually a little like...

    Messy Brew Pot

I've just acquired a turkey fryer. (YAY!) my problem with it is the fryer itself was brand new, had to be assembled, but the pot had been used to boil Maple syrup and is full of charred nastiness. Ive tried taking "easy-off" overn cleaner and steel wool to it, but haven't put in the HOURS that...

    What do you have?

um, I guess I'm too much of a newb to even vote. I didn't recognize anything on the list!! Only things I have are a couple buckets, wing capper, assorted bottles, siphon, tubes, airlocks, and couple carboys, one still in the box (got it this week, only one fermenter, still waiting on my last...

My beers are to filling, cant drink enough!

Your wanting to drink more than 5 is an interesting question. I know I love to drink beer, and once I get going, I don't like slowing down, let alone stopping. I also know SWMBO gets cranky if I do it on a regular basis (multiple times a week). If you are basing what you're used to drinking...

    Fermentation temps too low..?

I checked the primary this morning. It was about 45F outside but still really close to 60F in the basement (58F or so, according to the small food therm I had on top of the plastic lid to my Snazzy fermenter). It was bubbling away nicely. I know you were all worried, but it looks to be ok now.

    Fermentation temps too low..?

I just looked it up. (package was in French) gave a range from 15-34C. 15C works to roughly 59F ... SO I'm just not going to worry. If nothing happens, bubble-wise, I'll move the primary upstairs for a day or so.

    Fermentation temps too low..?

Can Primary temps be too low? My Basement is a nice steady 60F right now and I was a little overzealous with my batch of Oktoberfest (yes Im way too late, sorry) and pitched at about 60 as well. Will this do anything but slow my fermantation and extend my time in the primary for a few days...

    Thermometer Woes - Long Post

I'm with ya, Brother! Things that don't work like they're supposed always seem to get to me, even when they're cheapo/crapo peices of garbage. I dunno why I get my hopes up.... Good luck with your new Thermometer! Cheers

    disappointing aroma

I didn't even think of that. The yeast I used was a liquid yeast, I forget the name brand, but the HBS owner suggested it when I mentioned I was doing a wheat brew. It didn't need a starter or anything, just shake and add it to the cooled wort. The more I think about it, the more I think that...
