Show us your element housings/pots. How did you do it?

Here's mine. I was trying to get something simple and low-profile with a detachable cord. They're 120v 1500w elements, so I wired them up to a standard NEMA 5-15 plug ( your typical north American household outlet ). The gray part is a 1" electrical conduit coupler which slides over the...

Simple plug ends for my electric elements

I've been trying to figure out a simple and elegant solution for attaching an outlet into my heating elements. I didn't want a big electrical box hanging off the side, and wasn't fond of some of the solutions I've seen. They either seemed too bulky or too hackish. Them I figured this out. Its...

    1" couplers or nuts?

After welding some 1" npt half couplers to my keg, I will agree with this. I wish I went tri clover so I could easily take them out and cap them off for propane, or just easily remove for cleaning.

GLENN ELECTRIC HTT-60 WATER HEATER 6000W aka premade 6kw heatstick

Careful with the 208v on it...... on a 240v system you would be drawing 8000w on that thing..... You MIGHT be ok with just turning down the temperature adjustment on it though.

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

To be perfectly honest with you, I've topped off batches with tap water literally since I started brewing, and have NEVER had a problem with it. Relax, don't worry.....

is a 52 quart cooler too big to use for 5 gal batches

I use a 48-qt cooler (the generic cheap blue Coleman), and would generally only lose a degree over an hour with 5 gallon batches. I filled the lid of the cooler with spray-foam, and it made ALL of the difference with losing heat. The lid used to feel quite warm when mashing, now I feel NO heat...

Forgot to add the crystal 75.. options?

I say take the 1lb of crystal 75.......... and the rest of the grains to make up the recipe and make another batch! Leave the original the way it is. It's not going to be exactly what you expected, but it'll still be a good beer, and if you make another batch you can compare the two side by...

    Well screwed that pooch

so you put 4lb of grain and 3lb of DME to make up for your short-comings...... How big of a batch is this? 3 gallons?

    Good thing I'm married

Here in Canada, the limit isn't how much you've made in a year, it's simply how much you have on-hand at any given time. I think it's something equivalent to 100 gallons of home-brew beer in your house at any time. ( The number 476 liters seems to be stuck in my head, but I don't know how...

What saves time on brew day?

Word. I have an extra 5 gallon sanke keg that I dump my hot wort into, and just drop the stake back in. As it chills, it pulls the stake tighter making a good seal. Throw some sanitizer on top of the ball valve to handle the vacuum and it's the best no-chill container I could imagine. It's...

All-Grain Brewers: How long does your typical brew day take?

I think I did 10 gallons in about 4 hours a few weeks ago, maybe 4.5. A big time-saver for me is just no-chill brewing. I took apart my immersion chiller a few months back to make a counter-flow chiller with the copper, but never finished it. Instead I've been dumping the boiling wort into empty...

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

I brewed 5 gallons of this about a month ago, and have had it sitting in a carboy awaiting a free corny. Racked and force carbed it over the last 3 days, and it's finally reaching the proper carbonation level. It had a little BMC-type taste to it when it was just freshly racked, but after...

Building an all electric system in Beijing

    The thing is, unless it's SPECIFICALLY designed for 210v, a 4500w 240v element won't run 4500w on 210v. Assuming it's a 4500w element meant to run on 240v, 4500w = V^2 / R. R = 78.125mohm. 78.125mohm * 210v = 16.4 amps being drawn from a 210v outlet, which also only means 3445w, not 4500w...

    First All Grain Recipe Ideas?

10lbs of corn. Super easy. Or just do what you like. A simple 2 or 3 grain recipe at a single temperature is pretty hard to screw up :)

    First 10 gallon batch

I usually do 10 gallon batches, even on new recipes. I figure it's going to turn out in one of two ways. Either it'll be great and I'll be glad that I have 10 gallons of it, or it will be OK and although I'm not in love with it, it's still beer. Heck I can experiment with it if I want, age it on...
