I've always used table sugar to bottle prime with using the Tastybrew calculator. However today I see we are out of sugar (thanks kids...lol). Anyway I have a few packets of what I believe is maltodextrin that AHS supplies in their kits for bottle priming. Question is, on the tastybrew calculator there is a column for glucose/corn sugar, sucrose/table sugar, and 3 for different styles of DME. With Glucose I need 3.1 oz, with sucrose 3.0 oz. If what I have is in fact maltodextrin will I still need the 3.0/3.1 oz, or would it be different all-together?

We had a discussion about maltodex last week.

Malto-Dextrine
Notes:
Malt based sugar that is less than 5% fermentable. Increases the body and mouth-feel of the beer and adds slight sweetness.

You'd need to know the exact fermentablility of the stuff, then have to factor the amount to use accordingly. In order to prime with it, you would end up with way too much body in the beer. You could end up having to dump several cups of it into your beer to get the amount of fementablilty you would need.

Use table sugar, brown sugar, honey, orange juice, anything like that...

Hey hoosier,

Maltodextrin is unfermentable and is used to give the beer body and mouth feel. Because it is unfermentable it really wont help you prime. Also, I would recommend never using something in your beer that is unlabeled and your not 100% sure what it is; thats a good way of dumping a pack of sanitizer in your beer or worse. But look around your house, both honey and maple syrup can work for priming and i even heard of people using orange juice or soda(not recomended). I say sing by your lhbs and get some corn sugar, but whatever you go with im sure it will be one tasty brew.:mug:

Ok thanks, I wonder what it is then? The packet from AHS is labelled "priming sugar 4.5oz, add during bottling". I did a side by side comparison with the maltodextrin they include to add during the boil. Texture was exactly the same so I concluded this was maltodextrin as well, but I'm wrong.

Anyone have any idea what type of sugar it would be?

Thanks for the advice, I may have some honey laying around here somewhere, if I can't figure out what this AHS priming sugar packet is made of.

I just emailed AHS to ask what type of sugar it is, if they don't respond before I'm ready to bottle I may have to call them.
