Hi

I have used this recipe a few times and have had great results

http://drinks.seriouseats.com/2012/...n-crystal-malt-for-beer-how-to-technique.html

I discovered this article which says crystal malt has zero diastatic power

http://beersmith.com/blog/2010/01/04/diastatic-power-and-mashing-your-beer/

Does this mean however that you will not get any fermentable sugars from crystal malt during the mash - specifically if you make crystal meth, I mean malt, using the seriouseats.com recipe above?

It means the enzymes that convert starches to sugars are denatured and will not be able to mash itself or other grains. (Not considering other grains diastic power) However the heat from the process renders useable sugar so you do not need to convert them anyway. Moderate to highly roasted malts can be steeped because of this.
