I am brewing a black cherry stout extract kit from NB. The directions which I barely even reference anymore says to add the cherry flavoring at bottling and add it to taste. I also noticed that their was another note that said add it at any point in brewing process. Looking at other recipes it seems like the right time to add it would be right after the active fermentation dies off. Any recommendations on this?

I've personally noticed a bigger flavor profile when I either add things into a secondary for a week or at bottling. Flavors that I've added during boil haven't come through much.

Flavoring like what you are using there would best be done in secondary or at bottling as mentioned. Bottling is convenient because you will already have everything out and can draw right out of your bottling bucket.
