Is 1 lb of oatmeal about right for 5 gallons?

Does 1 lb of oats really disappear into 5 gallons? It looks like a lot when it is weighed out. I was going to cut it down to 1/2 lb.

I am putting together a recipe for a pumpernickel porter. The oatmeal is to add "chewiness" like bread and head retention. I don't want it to become oatmeal bread.

-- edit -- The title should have said "oats" not "oatmeal".

I recently started drinking a keg of pumpkin ale where I used 1 lbs of oats in a 5 gallon batch. It depends what you like but I think for me it is bordering on a little too much creamy feeling in the finished product. Next time I will cut down to 3/4 of a pound. But it will be personal preference thing.

Thanks. I will cut it back a bit. I want it to appear bready, not creamy.

Nuthin' wrong with creamy stout.

a pinch of biscuit will go a long way for breadyness. munich and melanoiden malt are also options.
