What is a beer/oxygen/carb stone???

I understand what it does (to an extent). . .what I would like to know is what are they made out of and/or where can you get the raw stone without any fitting already attached to it.

It's bits of stainless steel crushed to where the holes are a particular microns in size

And yes you can get just the stone... They're called diffusion stones.
