I've been using a pretty accurate floating thermometer, but I'm thinking I need a waterproof digital one. It would make my life so much easier! So, what's your favorite model (short of a pot-installed brewmometer)?

Well, I don't have one...but something cool to have is a temperature alarm...so keep that in mind when you are shopping. Buy a good one so you have it for good and can trust it.

My favorite was a digital pen type thermometer. It got too close to my burner one day and it melted and went all weird.

May it rest in pieces.

I'm looking for something similar, I'd like something to monitor my mash temperatures, as my cooler ML tun seems to lose some heat from the lid, and I'd like to know if I need to heat it up halfway through. I've gone through three Taylor brand thermometers, after the probe's in the mash for about 20 minutes, it breaks and room temperature readings are at 180-220 degrees. What have others found to work? I'm thinking a better brand might be good, but if they all suck, how do those of you with a similar cooler setup monitor the mash temp?

I use a Large Dial Thermometer

"Large, easy-to-read with a 2-inch face, 9-inch probe. Metal clip attaches to the lip of a kettle or mash tun for constant readings. Reads in Celsius and Fahrenheit(0°-220° F, 5° increments; -15°-110° C, 5° increments)"

Works great for me. I am thinking about getting one of the digital ones that you can program.

thanks hopfan, looks a bit expensive, but hopefully this one will be durable and not die in 20 minutes :)

Anybody ever find one of the thermometers that screws into a keggle fitting for less than $40 anywhere? I'm thinking about installing a sight tube, and at the same time I might fit a thermometer into the same fitting but they are SO damn expensive... :(

Bird - I just ordered one of the Blichmann Brewmometers. They can be had for $30 or less online. Also, I know there are some other brands I have seen for even less. I just like the dumbed down face on the Blichmann that shows all of the "magic" temperatures. :cross:

It is pricey, but I like the fact that it is completely watertight. You could drop the whole thing into your wort and it would continue working. Trust me, I've done it. I've used it on about 10 batches since then and it works fine. I have a touchless infrared thermo that I use for my fermenters and they are both spot on.
