Ok this is hard to understand. You have a carboy which has beer in it. It seems that the co2 or alcohol should kill most anything.
You say you did not use a vapor lock and used tinfoil for the entire time. So maybe you let some bugs in by not using a vapor lock. That’s a good lesson for me.

Ok I say bottle the batch and don’t worry about it.
If anyone asks tell them they are hops flees and are added for special flavor.

I am looking for pictures
Good Luck

I say bottle it and give is a Spanish name. Give it to some jerks you know and tell them it is beer tequila.

Oh yeah found the culprits. Two muthafuggin' fruit flies floatin' belly up in my brew. Bastids got free beer and I didn't even get to try it. Here's your one reason to never use tin foil instead of an airlock...

Damn. One male and one female. What are the odds?

33.33% I guess.

People eat fruit flies all the time without knowing it. Just go to a bar and hold a flashlight under any fruity liquor bottle with an easy-pour spout on it. You'll see plenty of dead fruit flies hovering at the bottom. Vermouth is a fruit fly favorite.

Although you will not get to enjoy your beer, know that two of God's creatures consummated their love in your carboy. As their bodys succumbed to the alcoholic, oxygen-less environment, their passion spired wildly. The product of their love-struggle squirms before you.

There's always a silver lining.

Ah too late. Just gave the beer the ol' 21 gun salute and dumped it. First batch I've ever had to dump. Ah well, I've got a blonde I was going to keg so I guess I can do that this afternoon. And I checked, that one's maggot free.

I play taps in my head every time i hear about a dumper....

I'm betting this one meets the "Satan's Anus" standard.

Heeeyyyy!! Easy man.. Satan's Anus is a family brewery! We've never seen any yellow maggots!:cross::D

Wow, and I thought it was awkward ordering an Arrogant Bastard whilst dining with my GF and her conservative, evangelical Christian mother.

"Hmm, I think I'll try a taste of Satan's Anus. Do any of you want to taste Satan's Anus?"

BTW, did I miss Revvy giving the "time heals all things, even beer" speech and telling the OP to bottle it?

Holy crap...3 years after this was posted and I'm laughing quite a bit. Frickin' awesome. I'd end up doing that with my MIL right in the room just for the helluvit.

You can make that a round 10 years now........Best post I've read on here in my first month.

Not sure what directed me to this thread. A link from a yeast proofing thread. Something about dead fruit flies in a yeast rehydration.

Crazy! Forum searches can find you in odd spots.

I am also intrigued to learn If Satans Anus is still pitching her fork. Must google it.

As I was reading this thread in horror, dreading what might be revealed next, I am very glad the OP never figured out how to use his camera....

Got me thinking though. Are there any critters that deposit their brood in air locks? Because from there, they could maybe crawl you know where.... Someone mentioned drain flies, and an airlock does kinda resemble a drain of sorts. You know, like a double p-trap maybe? Perhaps it's only the fine mesh on top of the airlock that shields us from this nightmare.

Maybe that's an argument for filling the airlock with sanitizer solution instead of water? Abundance of caution, and such.

My bubbling airlocks have caps with pinholes to keep out most insects.
Plus I always fill with star san. The acid + surfactant should drown and kill anything that gets through.

I also use waterless airlocks for most of my fermenters (long term sours). No bugs getting through those.

Cheers

I'd like to look into those. Exactly which waterless airlock do you like to use?
I use these in my Fermonsters:
https://www.morebeer.com/products/carboy-bung-silicone-breathable-10.html

And these in 1 gal carboys/jugs
https://www.morebeer.com/products/carboy-bung-silicone-breathable.html

They're durable, they seal extremely well, they are low profile, there's no need to fill with sanitizer, and there's no risk of sanitizer or air getting into the fermenter.

The major downside is they do allow significantly more oxygen through than a traditional airlock.

I had thought that maybe there might existing a spring loaded check valve that would allow gas to flow in only one direction (namely, out). However, I haven't yet seen anything like that.

That would be nice, right? I don't really like using a silicone airlock for my clean beers. I've been struggling with oxidation and I think this is the main culprit.

I've been pondering whether I can build one myself. ... I could jam a spring-loaded bottling wand into a drilled stopper.

Well, there had been some talk on the automation forum about making an electrically actuated pressure relief valve for the purpose of more precisely measuring the amount of gas produced (as opposed to relying on an airlock bubble counter, which is reportedly not very accurate for that purpose). It would deploy with a pressure sensor to judge when to release the gas, and a microcontroller would control the length of time that it is opened. I was looking into it not long ago but opted to use a TILT instead, which everyone seems happy with.
