Yeast stuck to the bottom of bottles

Hi all

For my most recent batch (a modified Coopers Dark Ale) I used M07 yeast with very high flocculation. It's so high that you can pour right to the last drop from a carbed bottle and see virtually no apparent yeast in the pour. However, of course there's a downside.

Normally, when I finish a bottle I rinse it out immediately until all the visible yeast is gone. I then store the bottle with the lid off (to help it dry out and avoid mold) then will properly sanitise before reusing. However, after rinsing and soaking overnight with detergent, some of the M07 is still visibly stuck to the bottom.

This is a new problem for me. How do others generally deal with it? Bottle brush? Or some kind of soak?

Fill with some hot oxyclean or PBW solution, soak for a while. Add a little bit of rice, cover the bottle, and shake the crap out of it. Maybe just hot detergent soak and the rice could help.

If a pbw soak and rinse doesn't do it, then recycle the bottle and work on replacing it. Much more fun to empty and clean a new full bottle than struggle cleaning an old empty one

I agree, sometimes it's easier to take the label off a new commercial bottle than clean out a really crusty homebrew bottle.

Cheers. That did the trick perfectly.

And also there are these bottle washers that should have enough power to knock the yeast off if using hot water.

lol I was going to suggest the same thing... cant believe it wasnt mentioned sooner... any home brew supply place will have them and they are as little as $7... if you cant swing it just use a garden hose with the sprayer on "jet" setting...

I always use a bottle brush on every bottle before bottling.....pain in the ass...but the extra time is worth it......I am going to kegs though..... :D
