I've used Mangrove Jack Newcastle Dark (M03) with good results. Wyeast London III (1318) is good for something a little sweeter and maltier. WLP 007 Dry English Ale is good for a drier, hoppier brown. And there's always the Wyeast standard British Ale (1098). WLP007 will be the driest and the London III will be the maltiest. The others are in between.
I've just used WLP005 and like how it turned out however i want to brew it again only this time dry hop it so i'm interested in finding a yeast that will allow that to shine through.
I'm thinking i may try Wyeast 1098 next.
I like WY1318 for an all around english style ale> especially if you are going hoppy brown ale, its bit of fruitiness should meld well with the hops you choose
I used harvested Bell's yeast in a brown ale, which was moderately hopped with Centennial and Willamette, and it turned out great. Wyeast 1272 is fairly close to Bell's yeast, if less fruity, so that's be a good option if you're looking into that style of brown.
I did an American Brown and just used US-05, rehydrated. I was going for the high end of the IBU and hoppiness for the style, so I really wanted a clean and neutral flavor.
