I am thinking about brewing a batch this weekend and have a quick question for some more knowledgeable brewers. With my kit came the liquid malt extract, not the DME, so for my yeast starter, do I need to add a cup of the liquid malt extract, or can I go to my local homebrew store and pick up a pack of DME?

What is your SG going to be? I mainly use starters if I'm making a High Gravity brew or something very very opaque.

Then again, more power to you if you like making mini beers from extract every time.

Do you know the reason for making a starter?

Yes of course. Most times a packet or vial does not provide enough viable yeast cells for a proper fermentation. Fact.
