In beersmith it says I need 13 pkgs of yeast to ferment my beer! That's impossible. I designed a regular pale ale with an og of 1.056. I'm under the impression for a 5.5 gal batch the tube alone is enough but I guess my question is I'd like to do a starter to ensure healthy yeast how big a starter should I do? The beersmith says this beer needs aprox 220billion and I am assuming the white labs w001 has at least 100 billion

Check the viable yeast date on Beersmith. It took me a while to figure out that's what was throwing off the calculation. Mine is defaulting to 2/20 something 2011 and stating a viable yeast amout of about 5%.

After I fixed this, it spits out correct pitching rates.

If you want another option to calculate them, check out mrmalty.com for starter rates.

Good luck!
