Alright, I'm curious about the different parts of my yeast starter.

I'm thinking that it's like this:
1 - wort
2 - yeast
3 - sediment from malt extract

Is that correct?

Its really hard to tell from that picture. There is usually only 2 layers, a layer of the starter beer and a the yeast that have settled to the bottom. There are 2 schools of thought that can help you...put it in the fridge overnight, that will get more yeast to drop and give you 2 definite layers, pour off a good bit of the starter and then swirl to mix up the yeast and pitch it. The other school is pitch the whole thing...it which case you can swirl it up and then you'll have only one layer.
