I've inputted my recipe for a black IPA that we plan on making next weekend. Its been over a year since weve brewed last and we are finally now getting back into it. So, I need some refresher tips! Its been so long since weve brewed that I have a new computer that I just downloaded my beersmith copy onto. There is now a newer version of beersmith that is now on this computer. Under the 'yeast starter' tab, it gives options for my recipe for either liquid or dry yeast. My recipe calls for Wyeast American II 1272. When I select this option, in the yeast starter tab down at the bottom it tells me I will need 23 packages of this without a starter  Even, with a starter it tells me I will need 3 packages. This cant be right can it?

Is there an entry field there somewhere for package date? Sounds like it's assuming the yeast is very old.

Yup, that was it. Thanks!
If I want to brew next Saturday, when is the best day to make my starter? I will be putting in on a stir plate.

If you are pitching the whole starter than 24-36 hours should be good. If you are decanting then I would still go 24-36 hours but then chill overnight in the refridgerator for an addition 12-24 hours then pour off.
