i'm making a 1L starter w DME.. couple things I want clarification on...

1. during the 15 mins boil i add DEM at the beginning of the boil or the end?

2. I start out boiling 1L of water or do i start with less to accommodate for the DME?

I swear I over think things sometime

Add the powder at the start and ballpark it. I have gone over pretty much every time. Account for powder and yeast at ~0.1L.

i ended up boiling aprox 1.2L of wort and I had almost 1L that i dumped into my flask, I didnt take into consideration space for the liquid yeast.. FAIL!

it will be a messy batch i am sure as the little guys start munching

Eesh, yeah. Any chance you have a clean gallon jug laying around? I'm not sure you're going to like what happens to that. :drunk:

no man I don't :(

that's why I have it in the pot it's sitting in. I will be picking up a 2000ml beaker tomm for sure.

Yep, what can you do? Throw some sanitized foil on top, keep it in the pot, and pray. Good luck!

yeah bro I have foil on it. pitch and pray is the name of the game :)

I'll follow up tomm

I think you want to end up with your intended starter volume at the end of your 15 min boil, accounting for boil off. The DME is 100g/1L based off your intended (post boil volume). The pale DME is about 38ppg, which equates to 1.038 at the ratio and end of boil volume. I think adding the DME to the water before heating is easier but you need to stir well when heating.

The absolute correct way to measure DME is to add the DME first and then fill the water up to a level that gets you the intended post boil volume. This is only possible to do if you are boiling in a flask. I've neglected this for starters where the wort is transferred to the final vessel after cooling and measured the DME and water volume separately, assuming the DME doesn't occupy much volume...

so it seemed to keep in the beaker. I was limited on how much I could shake it but I am gonna cold crash/decant it and have another go around. overall for my first ever starter it wasn't a complete failure :)
