Brewing a big DIPA this weekend. Should end up with 8%. Calls for cal ale wlp001. Should I add 2 vials? Or 1 is good enough? Yeast starter?

If you have the ability to make a starter I would but check mrmalty pitch rate calc to see how many vials based on your expected og

+1 to this advice. With an expected ABV of 8% your O.G. will be at least 1.075. Even 2 vials will not be enough. Check Mr. Malty for proper starter size.
Cheers,
Brandon

Unless you are making a very low gravity beer it is always best to make a starter or pitch more packs of yeast.

The purposes of making starters are to know that you have the proper amounts of VIABLE yeast and to save money. It costs less to make a weak wort than another pack of yeast.
