okay, another question from a noob! :) i'm thinking of getting a stir plate and making a good starter for my next batch. my question is this: AHS lists the Brewvint Yeast Fuel under YEAST NUTRIENTS (the same you normally add to the wort i suppose). would it be okay to just break the Yeast Fuel pill open and add to the starter wort when you boil it, or does it need to be a specific measured amount? the articles i've read about starters show you how to calculate the DME-water ratios and how to calculate the yeast, but i haven't seen one that said the yeast nutrients had to be any specific ratio. what is standard practice for adding yeast nutrients?

thanks.

I've never used nutrients so I don't have a real answer for you.

I know that they are in a specific dosage, and whatever you recieve is probably the perfect dosage for a 5 gallon batch.

I'd find out the brand of the nutrients, and find out if you can "overdose" the yeast before adding them to your starter...or just skip them all together on the stirplate.

I have added the whole thing to my starter. Then I don't add any to the wort.

so you just break the Yeast Fuel capsule open (after sanitizing of course) and mix the nutrients in the starter wort?

I would just follow the directions and add the whole capsule in the last 10-15 mins of your 60 min boil. I've done this before (plus a yeast starter) and it seems to work fine.

I have a small bag of yeast nutrients and I add a 1/4 teaspoon to my starter after I have boiled the starter wort. I don't get my ingredients from Austin Homebrew Supply so I don't know what the Yeast Fuel capsule is.

I don't advocate this... you should follow the directions. However, I just threw it in the starter wort when I boiled it... capsule and all.
