So was making my starter yesterday and was at the point of adding yeast and when I popped the lid on my white labs vial .... Bamb... yeast fizz everywhere. Not sure how much made it into started. Looked on line here and turns out this pretty common. Would have been nice to know a head of time but hey, live and learn. This is my fourth vial and this has never happened.

Anyway, I had an extra pack of Nottingham Ale yeast left form another brew day so I had to use that instead. Was using WL California yeast so they should be close for my honey brown ale. Pitched it today and already have nice heavy krausen.

Glad it turned out ok. I use White Labs too (because its what my LHBS carries) and learned the same way you did. Now, I always open the vial over the funnel into my starter vessel and open it very slowly.
