Yeast accident-- how screwed am I?

Ok first time extract brewer here, Everything went ok with the instructions other than my initial boil/steep took about 40/45 minutes instead of 30.


morebeer American pale ale 2 extract kit.
og 1.052
pitch temp ~ 75 F

So I used Wyeast American ale yeast, and like a dummy first timer didn't read the instructions first. I open the bag to find a bag within liquid. Then I read the instructions... shouldn't have been drinking.

So it says to move the activator to one side , liquid to one side then smack it.

I put it on my counter and smacked it, and it went everywhere.

Well, I slopped together what I could, probably left a lot behind...

I'm sure I got a lot of nice surface bacteria from my counter.. I did sanatize everything BUT the counter.

Kinda bummed that 2 hrs work might be ruined... hoping someone will brighten my day by telling me I can fix it with another yeast.

Am I ok or should I re-pitch (can't do it tonight, have to tomorrow)?

Dont pitch it - go to your local home brew store and get new yeast

When there is a hole in a pliable container and pressure is applied very rapidly... what did you think was going to happen?
So, you cleared the yeast of the counter and into you wort?
I would re pitch since it is more than likely you under pitched with that. Your beer may be just fine in the long run. But I wouldn't be surprised with an infection.

If it were me, I'd cut my losses, crosses my fingers and hope for no infections. If I did feel compelled to re-pitch I'd do so cheaply and use dry yeast as u may be throwing good money after bad here.

Yeah I did clear the counter, ultimately some got away. I wasn't sure If I should've sealed up the wort and tried to re pitch tomorrow or just make do.. so I tried to collect what I could and pitched it. Guess I'll try and re-pitch tomorrow.

Id agree with the others close your eyes and hope for the best.. Next time dont have so many home brews when brewing

Honestly only had 3 pints of lagunitas IPA while brewing, a modest amount for 2 hours, I was by no means drunk and chalk my mistake up to being green. Next time I'm using white labs liquid yeast.

Open white labs very slowly it can fizz up and spray everywhere... just saying.

And for gods sake don't shake a whitelabs tube then open it...

Will probably take awhile for fermentation to take off but since its already all done with might as well wait and see, I've read lots of horror stories and while definitely not a good scenario... Could luck out.

All the smack pack does is to "proof" the yeast. It's really not necessary if you make starter...

Add a re-hydrated packet of Safale US-05 (11.5 grams) ASAP. You want yeast to get the upper hand quickly. Now if some bacteria got in, it may show its face later, only time will tell. Luck could be with you, just try to beat the odds at the moment.

Well as of this morning it's fermenting, got some movement in the wort and the airlock is bubbling away.. Hopefully I luck out and everything's decent for a first.
