Wyeast can't be arsed to change the instructions on the packages for their lager yeasts, so they blatantly advise you on the package to severely underpitch as if you were doing an ale. what donkeys.

The only labeling I pay attention to on the packages is what stain it is and the date stamp.

I like w yeast and white labs. Yet I have had so many beginning home brewers tell me. I do not do a starter I just buy wyeast and that multiplies them and puffs up the back. <<<Proceeds to face palm>>>>>

Then again if you tell a beginner brewer to make a starter on top of brewing there first batch they majority will get intimidated. I see why they have those instructions on there. It might not bee such a bad thing.

...This is just bad business. They should simply state buy 2 packages!!!! more money for them, better beer for the noob who doesn't know how to make a starter. Sure, the yeast will still be viable and work eventually, but you will have a lag time of 7-10 days if you pitch at the proper temperature. I **** you not.

Also, their activator packs don't inflate for their lager strains, unless maybe you leave it for a really long time....I've used them several times, and there was hardly any noticeable inflation after 8 hours.

I agree with you Delaney, I just see why they do that. To a brewer that is beginning it is so simple just to pitch after you did everything that was needed for the brew. It is not good but will make something drinkable at least. You can worry about the pitching rate next after you got the sanitation regiment worked out.

It does seem counter intuitive and you are right to want them to put the correct info on the packet.

Unless said newb goes, "Woah? I need two packs? That's like $15! I'll just pick up a pack of dry yeast."

For what it's worth, White Labs instructions (unless they've changed in the last year) say to use one vial per 5 gallons as well per the old empty vial I have lying around on my desk. I don't remember what Wyeast says on their packs, but White Labs says to pitch and keep at 70-75F until fermentation starts.

I smuggle booze into sporting events, like hockey games in them. They hold a couple of ounces of your favorite spirit and won't show up on metal detectors. Just slip a few into the breast pocket of your jacket, buy an overpiced coke at the concession stand and bob's your uncle. So you pay 4 bucks for a coke, as opposed to 8 for a bud or 12 for a mixed drink.

I take them to Joe Louis arena during Wings games all the time.
