Sorry, I know there is lots of threads on this. I'm brewing a saison tomorrow and I don't have a heat belt or a way to get the temp up on my fermentation. Never needed to as I always brew ales and my basement is a constant 65 degrees which has always worked for me.

I do have a closet that is much warmer than the rest of the house, it stays around 76 degrees. Should I start fermentation in the basement and then move to the closet? Is the temp in the closet going to be warm enough for this strain? There is a heat register that I keep closed in the closet but I could open that up and move my carboy next to it? On top of it? Or should I hold off on brewing this and get a heat source?

I'm always in favor of working with what you've got. You could do this in stages if you don't mind keeping a close eye on fermentation.

1) start it in the basement
2) a few days into fermentation (as airlock activity starts to slow down just a bit), move it to the warmer closet
3) as airlock activity slows down more significantly, open up the vent to raise the temp a little more

I'm not sure it would be good to put the fermenter right on the vent. That might encourage wider temp swings, which could cause the 3724 to be even more likely to stall out (and as you probably know it is already pretty likely to do that).

Thanks, I guess I could always pick up a heat belt if it stalls out on me or use some brett to finish it..... Yummm!!!

Quite honestly, I'd say to put this one off until summer unless you get the belt. This strain does best at very warm temps. I usually wait for the hottest week, but that means I sweat into the pot, ewwww. JK.

As long as your temps stay steady in the closet I would start it there. Once things get rolling open the register. If it doesn't get hot enough to finish in 1-2 weeks, it will still finish but it may take another month to get all the way down.

If you're thermostat is set to drop at night I would hold off. The temp swings will do you in.
