hello all,

Today I made my very first batch using a recipe kit. I made a heffe weizen recipe. I think everything went ok one thing it kind of smells like something burned when the wort was poured in the fermenter. When I started to boil before I added the malt I did take the kettle of the burner(electric stove) like I was sopose to stirred really good. I did see some stuff on the bottom of the kettle when I was done. Do you think I burned it or is it soppose to kind of smell like burn sauce? What can I do about it? Second hefe weizen is light blonde lookingbeer this was dark why?

you probably scorched the extract. not to worry you brew will be just fine. chock this up to a learning experience ... supposed to add the extract at around 160F or so.

your beer is dark because you used extract ... next time add half of the extract at the beginning and half at 10 min before the end of the boil.

+1. No harm done, and split the extract like Tipsy said. Heck I've boiled just plain hops for an hour and added the extract at the end, but that can lead to a "vegetable" or "grassy" flavor I'm told. Didn't hurt my "Cascading Wheat IPA" though.

it will taste fine. not like the style you where shooting for but not bad. the darkening is because of a mallard reaction caused by adding all the extract at once. really no big deal.
