I am trying my first ever cider at the moment and after watching all of Lakeyblokes videos on Youtube felt confident enough to give it a go.

I have ran into an issue

We tried making a 1.5 liter starter i added the 1.5 liters of apple juice from the supermarket to a flask and onto a stir plate,I opened the yeast after letting it get to room temp and noticed first of it was white in colour where as it looked brownish on YouTube

I added it to the juice and also noticed it was clumpy but didnt worry about it at that stage, i ran it for 24 hours and noticed the clumps where still there and did look like it had multiplied any.

I ran for an additional 24 hours and again it did not appear to grown or multiply any and clumps where still around. after 72 hours the yeas seems to be clumped on the bottom of the flash and some bit floating around.

I took a gravity reading at the start which was 1.040 and a reading just now 1.000 so it appears to be working but not multiplying or what ever.

Your thoughts would be much appreciated

Was it one of the purepitch packs, or more of a test tube thing? I then to mush the purepitch packs around a little bit, especially if they have been stored on end.
Did you add any nutrients to the starter, of just apple juice?
The starter should be noticeably lighter after 48 hrs on the stir-plate.
I think you may have started with too high of a gravity and sent the yeast into ferment mode rather than reproduce mode.
Apple juice is not the most nutrient rich media.
I follow White Labs starter, even for cider. http://www.whitelabs.com/resources/homebrew-starter-tips

You should be able to save it by letting it settle, pouring off most of the liquid from top, and adding water + DME with some GoFerm (ideally) or other yeast nutrients.

Hi and thank you for the response, i will give that a go

Please tell me what DME is

Dry Malt Extract. They sell it at any home brew store. Basically powered, un-fermented, un-hopped, beer. Go with a 'light' and it will impart zero flavor in the limited quantities needed for a starter. I like to use a 'sparkling amber' with my ciders, for just a little hint of "malty flavor with caramelly overtones" the background with a slight boost to the amber color. Again though, with the 1/4 cup DME to 500ml of water (for 5 gallons, double for high gravity) you are really not going to notice a 'beer' taste.
