Hey everyone. I just joined the forum and thought I would introduce myself. I started brewing a couple years ago, thanks to a Christmas gift, and have been getting more involved in brewing since my first batch.

Recently I've been expanding my operation, now having 3 brews currently in fermenters(and maybe another one starting any day). Additionally I just planted my first 3 verities of hops (cascade, magnum, and Willamette), so I'm anxious to see how this process turns out.

I enjoy the hands on of home brewing, creating something from nothing. But I'm determined to make it cost effective as well, which is why I started my hops. I want to be able to make as many verities of beer possible for less than the cost per bottle of a 6 pack I can find at the store. I know some verities will be hard or impossible to accomplish without bulk ordering and whole sale prices, but close counts.

Wish me luck in my brewing adventures.

Hops are a great start to make stuff less costly but yeast harvesting is stupid-easy and cost about the same as a case of 1/2 pint mason jars and one 2-quart jar.

Bulk grain buying CAN save money but has a longer return on investment due to the cost of the mill...even if you do go Corona mill.

Welcome to the obsession.

Oh I didn't tell you? I'm right off 441 ;-)

in Vegas, we used to tell people what ever store they were looking for was right on the corner of Tropicana & Flamingo. google map it. they don't intersect.:rockin: we were a-holes.

on the subject of hops... keep them tamed or they go wild!

One step at a time. I don't even have a beer fridge yet :-/ my wife isn't impressed at the $60 I spent for my hop garden

I brew on the cheap too. Get a Corona mill and ask your LHBS what their bulk discount is. Mine's 20% off for 50 lbs. Bam, $10 in my pocket. 3 bags of grain and my mill will have paid for itself, except it was a birthday gift. Harvest your yeast cake. BIAB will get you into all grain for literally $35 if you 1. Don't mind using aluminum pots. And 2. Use paint strainer bags from Home DeLowes.

3 batches in, and I've spent more on hops than I have equipment. Time to work on my green thumb.

I've tried. She sticks to her wine coolers. Oh well, her loss. She doesn't harp at me too bad about it. Just gets irritated that I hog the kitchen all day. Lol

My wife only drinks Bacardi O and diet... so, I hear you.

However, if I were to purchase 50 Zombie Dusts, it would be much more than the $40 I spent to brew it.

Try something fruity like a Strawberry Blonde - she will change her mind very quickly about your brewing. That's what worked for me.

She refuses to try anything I brew. I've given up on forcing her to try. I'll brew for myself and friends.

my wife likes Mike Black Cherry. we have yet to find a beer she really likes enough to drink. I don't see it as her loss, just more beer for me. and she's real supportive of my hobby. she is the unsung hero. although she's not so much a fan of me hogging the kitchen in the winter and such. in the summer and warmer days I mash outside.

My girlfriend doesn't like beer also. She tries most that I drink, and only like the vanilla frambozen from the brew kettle in strongsville, oh. But she is really supportive of me.
