Cool... another homebrewer in Seaford. PWM74, where are you? I am between Merrick Rd & Sunrise Hwy and Washington & Jackson Avenues.

I was displaced by Sandy so I am living back with my folks and that has put my brewing on hold even though my father has a nice wine cellar that I could use. All of my equipment is in storage until I get the hell out of here. Fortunately, I am moving to Farmingdale on March 1.

I have gone to a few of the meetings for the Long Island Beer and Malt Enthusiasts club but haven't been to one in several months. Pretty cool group.

Their meetings are the first Wednesday of the month and they move around as far as where they meet, I've been to meetings in Patchogue and Massapequa.

Their website: beermalt.org doesn't seem to be up right now but that's where I usually find out where the next meeting is.

Well, I guess I'll add in my two cents. Been brewing again for about two and a half years. Started out with Mr. Beer and am doing partial mash kits from AHS. I've only done ales but a lot of them. Stouts, choc stouts, porters, IPAs, APAs, brown ales, etc., about 260 gals so far. Slowed down due to Sandy/snow storm. I live in Miller Place. I'm a member of BEER, but because I work a rotating shift and have a side business, I usually don't have the time to attend meetings. Going to be heading to the spring beer fest at Nassau Col next month when my co-worker gets back from deployment. Went last year and had a great time. Also went to Martha Clara also very good. I can tell you more about the beers I had at the beginning than those at the end. We rented a van (and driver) to get us there and back.

Hey almost neighbors!

Brewtopia (port Jefferson) starting up an informal, lets get together and taste some home brews, on first Tuesdays of the month. I missed the first one but am planning to make it next month. Also have a judged brewing contest in the works. Pretty low key but looks to be fun.

What yeast strain and temperature?
I used a dry Belgian Saison yeast (Lallemand Belle Saison). I've never used it before so I'm anxious to see how it comes out. I'm fermenting at 68-70. I was going to put the heating belt around the fermenter, but decided not to.

Will you let temp increase as it ferments or control temp? Sounds like you are planning to control.
No, I'm just gonna let it ride along with at the ambient temperature in my house, If it's something that comes out good and worth doing again, I'll ferment with the heater belt on and see if it gets funked a bit.

made a 4L starter last night for brewday tomorrow. Gonna try that Double Jack clone again.. something wasn't right in the last batch.

hey guys just brewed my first batch last week from a brooklyn brew shop kit. Already want to make another batch this week. What stores do you recommend in suffolk county?

East Farmingdale (Suffolk) here. Brewing for 2 years. Doing partial mash brews. Done Ales and Lagers. I keg all of my brews and have a 4 tap (for now) keezer. Nothing like brewing your own beer.

About to start a New Zealand Rye IPA in a couple of minutes. (Brewing, not drinking...)

Nice! You get an early start! I just started heating my strike/sparge water with a bucket heater.. Need to hit Arbor or Karps later because I don't have enough two row.

Brewtopia added grain grinding an has an excellent selection of craft beer for research.

I have to head back out to PEP boys for headlights for the car. Maybe I'll drop by there and take a peak. Finished my IPA and am about 30 minutes into the boil for a double chocolate stout.

Avid brewer over here from Glen Cove. Been brewing for 4-5 years now and make atleast 3-4 batches a month. Also interned at the Greenport Harbor Brewery for a few months. Just wanted to recommend Kedco in farmingdale to you guys. Dave is the guy who runs the place and is a really great dude. Unless what I need is extremely cheaper online, I always try to support them and buy what I need there. Karps is also pretty good for used kegs and liquid yeast.

Cool thanks man, I've been to brewtopia before, never knew they had home brew stuff, probably just wasn't looking for it. Going to check that out on my day off.

Also found a shop in patchogue online called brewtique. Gonna check that out too.

If you like hot sauces, in that same small mall is a store called Pepper Heads. They have everything from mild, to the sauces where you have to sign a waiver before they'll sell it... You can also hit up Port Jeff Brewing for a few samples. They're just a short walk away.
My NZ RIPA was starting to bubble about 6 hours after I finished brewing it. The Dbl Choc Stout still sitting quietly...

I used to go out of the way to go to Brooklyn Homebrew for everything, but got tired of making the trip all the way out to the ass end of Brooklyn all the time. I just go there when I'm looking for something exotic that most of the homebrew shops on LI don't carry. I live about 15 minutes from Kedco and have been frequenting them a lot lately. They are really nice, helpful, and know their stuff . I should have been going there from the start because they have a nice little homebrew shop there!

Being in Brooklyn I have to say that I'm unimpressed with Brooklyn Homebrew, despite its claim to being the best homebrew shop in the city. The whole staff there exudes the typical snobbish brooklynite attitude which makes its uncomfortable asking for help. My favorite place to go here is called Bitter and Esters. Its owned and operated by a bunch of beer nerds who brew on premise. Stop in anytime and they'll share samples of what they've got on tap with you while answering your questions, helping you pick out the right ingredients for your recipe and just shooting the ****. They even hold classes and events regularly to help brewers on their journey towards better beer. All in all, very cool place. If any of you are ever in Brooklyn you should definitely check it out.

Their website: beermalt.org doesn't seem to be up right now but that's where I usually find out where the next meeting is.

I'm in Ronkonkoma, been brewing a little over a year (extract) and also a member of LIBME.

The site is up, but there is an issue where it's not redirecting you when you go to the Beermalt.org domain. You can visit it here: https://sites.google.com/site/beermalt/home

Next meeting March 6th at The Good Life in Massapequa.

They do raffles nearly every meeting for tickets to events, hard to get beer, and homebrew supplies.

No membership fees to join the meetings, but for $25 you get a charter membership which includes discounts at some craft bars and Distributers.

Please do!

There is usually drink specials or a special beer on tap (sometimes on cask) directly from a local brewery for the meeting.

First half hour or so is socializing, next half hour to an hour is the meeting itself followed by a demonstration (not every meeting has a Demo) then more socializing.

Oh, and drinking too.

BTW -- If anyone asks for you to introduce yourself, do so and let them know you're "Here for the beer"

Hope to see you there!

Thank you , here are some current pics
I am in stony brook. All grain brewing for a few years Charter member of libme. I am looking at these pictures and hoping you have a good Carbon monoxide detector in your basement.
I am kegging a saison today that we made in the garage during sandy.Anybody have a cool name for it??

Yes , I do

1 in the basement and a hard wired one on the second floor. It went off twice when I had the 23 tip burner, which also left a lot of soot. Changing too 10 although takes a little longer creates no soot and carbon dioxide sensor happy. The basement is only accessible through bilco doors which I leave open when I brew.

New additions to the brew cellar

A arduino temp monitor program code set up by hbt member Jimmayhugh

Silver soldered couplers with the help of silver solder topic on the board. If anyone on Long Island needs to borrow the dimple tool and flux or help doing , let me know

co detectors sound off at 35ppm.7ppm over time will make you very sick
I am a building analyst so I can measure this.I recently measured 7ppm in the top floor of my house after brewing in my garage[attached] with the door half open. I now have a fan set up and no co. Please consider using a fan to ventilate the basement
