Now that I am retired, if I find myself in the middle of the afternoon with nothing particularly pressing to do, and in need of something to wet my whistle, I might opt for pouring a pint. This is a new thing; nothing I would have done when I was employed, (nor even had the chance to consider). My wife has teased me from time to time about “drinking alone”. I am still puzzling about whether she has a concern about my consumption of alcohol, or is just miffed because I didn’t pour her one too!

Well, I thwarted the drinking alone accusation this week by acquiring a new drinking buddy!

Well when I used to dive I had a Dive Buddy.
When I rode motorcycles I had a Riding Buddy.
When we all got together we were usually drinking, but drinking was never the reason, it was just what happened.
I don't think it would be healthy to get together for the purpose of drinking.
That's just my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of things that we did that would've felt like they weren't worth doing if there were nothing to drink.
My favorite is probably the Volleyball parties that we used to throw. The fact that it attracted women was definitely a plus.

I've been under the impression that retirees are even busier than when they were working...

Coupled with the fact that I've been injured far, far more times enjoying a beer with friends than alone, I'm going to assume she's upset you just didn't ask what she wanted as well.

I mean, if you're worried about what's "healthy," riding motorcycles isn't particularly healthy (considering the staggering death rate in motorcycle accidents compared to car accidents). Diving has a lot of risks associated with it too. Getting together for the purpose of drinking doesn't necessarily mean getting together for the purpose of drinking yourself into a stupor. I often get together with friends to try out a new brewery or craft beer bar. I don't see that as any more unhealthy than "just happening" to drink with friends after playing football or riding motorcycles or going diving.

My 90+ year old father in law moved in with us about 2 years ago. He immediately became a fan of my homebrew efforts. In between brew days we have plenty of work maintaining the property.
Once our work is done we often retire to the Shady Grove for hops inspired refreshment.

My wife and I are retired. After all our day's chores are done we have happy hour in late afternoon. Just one for her and two for me. She's not as big a beer drinker as I am, but her favorite is oatmeal stout, so I frequently brew @Yooper's recipe.

Lately, she has become addicted to the first batch of raspberry hard lemonade I recently made. She said, "make it with blueberries next time!"

Drink whatever, with whomever and whenever you want for whatever reason you have, I don't care.
It's always your choice.

Not quite retired yet, but on sunny afternoons on the weekends I'll sit in the backyard and have a homebrew with the dog and our two cats. The wife will join in as well when she feels like it.
When I am retired, that may become a daily occurrence....
Other than that, my homebrew club buddies on the second Thursday of the month....

I'm a relatively recent retiree and my ritual is evenings around the fire pit. We're empty-nesters and my wife basically doesn't drink so it is usually just me and the dog. I look at the stars while enjoying a brew or two and she scouts the yard looking for stuff to chew on.

Is the top one an Oak Strat body?
It's a Jazzmaster that I made out of a pair of torrified, book-matched, swamp ash boards. It's light as a feather. I call it the "Wow!" guitar because whenever anyone plays it they invariably say, "Wow!" It's very loud unplugged and its neck and body are very alive with vibrations that go into your left hand and body. I built it because I was curious about torrified wood, but ended up keeping it because it's one of those lucky guitars that just sounds too good to sell. Can't say I've had much luck with torrified wood beyond this one, though.

Edit: Also, I screwed up on this guitar, I made my templates off of a friend's guitar, so the pickguard doesn't go around the bridge. Dumb mistake I should've caught, I'll fix it someday. I kinda hate beveling pickguards.

They are just called “drinking bird”. You can pick them up cheap on Amazon; I got two for $15.
My dad picked up one on vacation back in the mid-60’s and kept it in the medicine cabinet. I would go in there when I was a tiny kid and ask him to show it to me when he was shaving. I’m still fascinated by them.

While i am still working, my off days will include a quick bite to eat and a cup or two of home roasted coffee in the morning followed by cleaning up the house (two dogs that enjoy ripping up stuff animal toys) a quick tour of the backyard for anything that needs to be picked up, and then a project. Around 1 or so, it is sit down time with lunch and a beer, usually the dogs are sitting with me. Usually the house is empty with just me and the dogs and it is perfect. Sometimes we all take a bit of a nap, other times we just sit and watch the world go by. So, I guess my dogs are my drinking buddies. LOL. Never in excess, but a couple to just enjoy the day. Rock on!!!!!!!
