I cool my wort with my submersion chiller to ~70 and then whirlpool by simply stirring it up in the brewpot and waiting 20 minutes for the trub cone to settle. I think a lot of us on this forum do that.

I was wondering, though, what about cooling the wort as cold as possible before the whirlpool, like 35F if you are coming from an ice bath in another submersible chiller, and then doing the whirlpool?

I know the lower the temp of the wort the more cold break (not rate dependent, temp dependent!) you get, so that's good. But also wouldn't this have an effect of cold crashing during the whirlpool to help settle out even more stuff?

If you are saying, don't whirlpool till you get to 35, then whirlpool, I don't think that would make much difference. It would only take you longer to reach 35. It's going to take you long time to get to 35 anyway with an ice bath.

If you're saying whilrpool at lower temps to make the trub cone, then I guess that sounds like a good idea - more cold break, more trub. But I doubt we're talking that much difference. It always seems to me that most of the cold break happens on the way to 70F. I don't notice a lot more b/t 70 and 45.

Any issues with Trub clogging things up during the recirc that creates the whirlpool?
