I typically fine with gelatin and that's what I've always used, but I decided to give whirlfloc a shot and holy CRAP I've never had a clearer wort going into my fermentor.

I'm convinced. I didn't discover some new secret, but just though I'd share.

I like it myself. You can get all the trub to settle out before the wort goes into the fermentor. Very clear at that point.

But does it matter if the wort is clear? I just want clear beer. I use it too, but not sure it makes much difference in the final beer. Haven't tried without it because I'm ascared.

It doesn't REALLY matter, but I know personally I'm after commercial quality brew. Personally it's just that extra step. People drink with their eyes, too. If it's a crystal beer, it makes me feel that much prouder.

Also, if you're trying to keep trub out of your fermentor, it helps.

If nothing else it makes racking easier.

I used Whirlfloc for the first time last week having used loose Irish Moss before. The Whirlfloc really did clear the wort much more than the Irish Moss I had been using.

I'll still be hitting it with gelatine after fermentation though.
