I've got a lot of grain I need to store - two 50 pound bags. What do you guys use to store your open grain? I'd like to find a big bucket with a tight lid, but I think I'll need something bigger than an Ale Pail.

I haven't ordered in mass quantities yet (no grain mill).

I'm thinking one of those clear (or slightly opaque) rigid storage bins with a lid that snaps on would work.

They're stackable, clear enough to see how much grain you have and tight enough seal to keep out unwanteds.

Mine is in Food saver bags inside new aluminum trash cans in the garage. The FoodSaver bags keep out the bugs, and the trash cans with lids keep out any vermin.

I've prepackaged some bags for my Haus Pale Ale, Hefeweizen, & Kolsch complete with specialty grains, so when I get the urge, I just grab one, open it and pour it in the Barley Crusher. Weighing has already been done before I vacume packed it.

Small quantities (3 lbs or less) get vacuum sealed and stored in a dark closet. Larger quantities go into a large, plastic bag lined bucket, and into the same closet.

Found some plastic barrels with a lid that is sealed by a metal strap in a kinda toggle fashion around the perimeter. I used to use them to store bird and grass seed. They are bright blue and about-guessing-30-ish gallons. I have a vacuum sealer, and a big digital scale, but haven't got that energetic yet. The barrels were from a friend who got them from a place that bought plastic resin in them. Since then I have found them at the feed store for about 10 bucks. Last a lifetime-stackable-about 40-42 inches tall, maybe about 18 inches in diameter.

Basement.

I use those big rubbermaid containers. The 55 lb sacks get tied up tight and go straight in. My specialty grains go into freezer-strength zip-loc bags, and then into another rubbermaid.

We buy our grain in large quantities also and store in plastic ale pale type 5 gal buckets. Each bucket holds approx. 25 lbs of barley. They work great. The only LHBS i've ever been in they stored/dispensed from them also.
Cheers:mug:

I'm thinking about using my wine buckets for the time being, but I'd like to get some large, plastic buckets (like the kind used for bird seed) to store big purchases. My specialty and my hops are in the deep freezer.

For about $16.99 each you can buy pet food containers that have a gasket in the lid to keep out air and moisture. They are monted on casters and hold a 55# bag of grain. I have stored for over a year with no problem.
You can buy these at various mega marts look in th pet food dept.
they cost more at the big pet stores however.
I will get you the name and a Pic if interested, they may also have a web site.

I bought two rubbermaid tubs for my sacks of grain, and some disposable containers for my hops (which I store in the freezer).

I wish I'd gotten the buckets. I still may get them eventually. It's not like big tubs aren't constantly needed for storage.

I'm pissed off, now. Been planning to buy in bulk once the mill is all sorted out, but that's predicated on buying a dehumidifier for the basement (it's not wet, but it's definately damper down there than I want to be storing grains in).

Those friggin' things are close to $200! Cheapest model Depot had was $140, and I doubt that it's big enough. So, I'm going to take my time finishing the mill until I can buy a dehumidifier as they go off-season later in the summer. No point spending money on big bags of grain when it'll likely go bad (I have lots of those Rubbermaid containers, they are far from airtight).

Buy a couple of those 15 gallon bins from the guy on brewboard. They're like $25 shipped each and have a screw on widemouth lid with a gasket. Totally air tight and each one holds a sack.

I hear ya! I've got two large dehumidifiers that run full time during the summer (but I've got a large basement).

How about some of this in a rubbermaid container. Much cheaper than a dehumidifier, and works well for small volumes even if they're not airtight.

Oh yeah, good call! I need to get my hands on some Damp-Rid! That's supposed to work really well - similar, it seems, to this gel.

They sell it in half gallon cardboard containers at Walgreen's. I use it in my kegerator to minimize frost buildup.

Well, my link isn't dead but the link in the very first post there is because the thread is months old. If you read though it, there's an email address too. I'm just too lazy to do the work.

Oops, that's what I meant. I had just read through that whole thread (there are several other dead links along the way) a couple days ago, so it wasn't really any work for me to find his contact info...

I use cat litter buckets, lined with heavy plastic bags. Each litter box holds just at 20# of grain, so 55# will take 3 buckets.
They also take a little less space because they are square.
