have a big beer in primary and plan on dry hoping in secondary. I plan on leaving it in secondary for at least a month. My question is should I dry hop when I rack to secondary or wait a few weeks before I plan to bottle. I've heard the oppinion that it's not good to let the hops sit in for extended periods.

Closer to bottling is better. You want all fermentation and CO2 to be 100% done for best results. Do it one week prior to bottling. After 3 days, gently stir the hops around being careful not to oxygenate...

Agreed. Dry hopping is used to impart a fresh hop aroma so doing so closer to bottling time will achieve that.
