Better taste (IMO) and better clarity.
More things to tinker with and DIY projects.
Having my neighbors wander over when I'm brewing and look on in apparent amazement.
Spending extra time outdoors.
Saving big-time money on each batch (after ignoring the capital outlay for the equipment).
Drinking beer.

On the downside, there's more stuff to clean and my wife sometimes gets cranky when I'm brewing for 6 hours. (To help solve this, I plan mini-projects around the house so that when I'm mashing and boiling I can be productive. I also clean as I go, to the extent possible.)
 
Extract beer is like making koolaid. It has its place. AG is lemonade from lemons.
