Hey everyone, I've been reading this forum for a while now and I'm finally "coming out of my shell" so to speak. Great stuff here!

Anyway, I'm new to homebrewing myself and I also create websites as a hobby on the side.

I was thinking it might be kinda cool to create a site that is dedicated just to homebrew beer recipes where one could post them, rate them, give reviews, etc. That is all the site would be.

If a beer recipe review website like this were created, what would you want to see in it, what options or capabilities?

I'm just curious and I hope you don't mind me asking here. I would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this. Heck, it may even be a bad idea, I don't know.

I was just thinking of creating a site like that, and make it really clean looking, user friendly, etc. And of course, free.

Once again, glad to finally post here and look forward to reading more goodies in this forum. Glad I discovered it! :mug:

Import/Export via BeerXML
Searchable recipe database
Advanced recipe search - plug in stuff in your fridge and it finds recipes based on what you have on hand. A great way to get rid of random hops :p

hopville http://www.hopville.com already has a pretty good site for this type of activity, but if your gonna make another one, it should be able to expand on the calculations and include things like, pitching rate, boil off calculator, absorption calculator, acuratly handle late extract additions and an IBU calculator that acurately handles different boil levels. Let us know when it's ready!!

Some awesome suggestions, and thanks for that Hopville site link, I will check that out too.

Keep the ideas coming, I will make notes!

I always love it when folks come on here asking us to help them come up with something like a recipe database, or a forum for homebrewers to seek help, and share ideas and recipes.

DO you know where you're at?

I have access to a pretty damn awesome database with a ton of recipes that are vetted, and another section where people tweak and discuss other recipes they haven't brewed yet. But there's like 40,000 people contributing to an awesome knowlegbase on brewing....

We police to make sure these recipes have actually been brewed, and aren't someone's experiments, AND you can you can easily judge the quality of the recipes, by people's comments.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but why would we want to do so on another site, when we already have all that and more, right here?

I'm sorry, I didn't mean any kind of bad intention. I was just thinking an entire and cool site dedicated to just homebrew recipes would have been neat. And only on that subject. And not a forum. This place is great and I'm not trying to downplay or take away from that at all. My apologies.

Oh yeah, and welcome to the forum.:)

I'm not sure why Revvy is so peeved. Like he said, most of what you want to do is on here, but I wouldn't mind if it were organized a little better. But I'm a newb, too, so maybe I should keep my trap shut, as well.

I love this site and the resources here - but I could see where a recipe database would be useful. The one here is basically a subforum; some nice database searches, reviews, etc could be powerful.

I like the "plug in what you have" idea. I have a half ounce of this hop, a quarter ounce of that hop, washed yeast, etc. in my fridge and I don't really know what to do with the leftovers. It would be cool if I could plug in what I have and have something try to match it to a recipe. These already exist on cooking websites.

This forum is nice for recipes, but it's not the most user-friendly way to find/execute recipes.

What I look for:
  • Advanced search tools
  • Filter/sorting is key (I do PMs, and a recipe website is great if I can JUST find PM recipes when I want to)
  • Areas sorted by ingredients (ex.: A Citra page with all brews that are based around Citra, or a Munich page with brews that have a heavy dosage of Munich)
  • Rating/feedback/comments
  • An area for a picture of the finished beer

Good luck, if you do pursue this.

I don't know how hard it'd be, but a feature that factors in your previous ratings to new searches would be cool. For example, I tend to like "middle of the road" beers, so if I had rated a few recipes that would indicate such a preference, it'd be cool if it put wilder recipes lower in the search results.

This one would be simple to implement but hard to enforce: there should be a way for raters to indicate whether or not they've actually brewed the recipe. I can see the ratings quickly becoming useless if folks start rating beers they've never tasted.

how dare you even think of giving us homebrewers additional resources!

:D :mug:

i like a lot of the suggestions given already...

I'd suggest teaming up with Brad Smith (owner/creator of BeerSmith). He's always looking for additional resources.

Best,
~SB
