if you went into a London pub with this signage which includes the words "Purveyors of Finest Ales, Stout & Porter" and neither the bartender nor the owner knew what a Porter was?

Only the US seems to be obsessed with beer "styles", stemming from the work of Michael Jackson and the ongoing conformity endorsed by the BJCP.
Elsewhere they just seem to brew and enjoy whatever they want, and describe beer by its predominant taste rather than applying an arbitrary stylistic label.
