I took a second hydrometer reading one week in (see my post here) and I noticed some sort of "schmutz" floating on the top of the wort. It could be remnants of the fermenting... but I've been nervous all week about mold.

What would mold look like and do I throw the batch out if it is?

You should be ok with mold, if you do have it it will look fuzzy, green/brown/whitish. If its just weid scum or bubbles floating around, it's probably just regular fermentation. I always have a weird film or scum hang out after the krausen falls, it's fine. Different yeast strains have differentwerid things like that.

mold in beer looks like every other type of mold out there: fuzzy, fluffy and most often white, off white, green, or brownish black.
