Was wondering if somebody could weigh in on what could have possibly have gone wrong. I hit my pre boil gravity exactly of 1.062, but my post boil gravity was only 1.064 when it was supposed to be 1.076. What could have caused this? I did have one boil over. Any help?

All grain or extract? Top up water? Sometimes the preboil is not mixed enough and the measurement is off.

What was you pre boil volume and your post boil volume?

All grain, i adjusted for temp, and i mixed up the pre boil to make sure I had an accurate reading. I made a double IPA, can all the hops in the boil throw off the reading? My mash temp was a little on the higher side around 156. Could it not have been a good enough boil?

That is what I was thinking, i'm thinking the post boil reading was wrong. Don't know how it was wrong though.

yes i spun it, in the post boil reading there were a lot of hops in the test tube too, so i don't know if that has anything to do with it

The real question is: How many home brews did you have when you took the readings?

If you had to close one eye :drunk: to read the hydrometer then you may have your answer. Not that I've ever had to close one eye to read before no not me, but I have had to ask the wife to read if for me. To :drunk: to even read the darn thing with one eye let alone two.

How long in the fermenter? You could take another measurement.

been in the fermenter for over 12 hours...guess i could take another reading and see what it is right now. And I didn't have TOO many home brews, in fact I only had 1! I was trying to bottle another batch, measure out hops for a 15 minute, 10 minute and 5 minute addition, and take gravity readings, so i could have screwed it up.
