Nephew just bought a house and hops are growing in backyard. Any idea or is it possible to identify just by looking?

I doubt you can tell by just looking at the cone. Maybe in the leaf shape. Try smelling them. You could always send them off to a lab to have them test the alpha acids. But I doubt it would be worth it.

Just read some other stuff on identifying unknown hops and people also suggest making a tea with them. Although, unless you have some knowledge as to other variety tastes, you could still have trouble. Either way, you should be able to get an idea (citrus, earthy, spicy, etc.)

They look similar to Centennials but of course that's just a wild ass stab in the dark;)

You'd have to send them off to a lab for a definitive answer. +1 to smell and tea for an idea of what they might add to your beer:)

could you try having your real estate agent get in touch with the seller's agent, and see if they could ask the seller what they are?

Think they were from owner before...

Unless the previous owner was a brewer, there is a good chance that they are Golden (not Golding) hops. They are sold at many plant nurserys and home stores. Neat plants, but I don't believe they are very popular for brewing.

Since I've been brewing I've never seen brewing hops sold outside of homebrew shops and online.
