Well the bug bit me. I'm going to build a electric brewery. Right now I'm stuck on sea duty so with the ship going in and out. I figured I would build my control panel on my off time at sea. I'm going with the electric brewery plans. Temperature controlled PID Controlled SSRs, 50a version, wiring two 4500w elements for the back to back option.

Right now I'm shopping for two 40 amp SSR (12VDC input voltage, 240VAC output voltage). I've looked and they range from 20 dollars all the way down to 2 dollars. Heck even seen some for 40 cents. I know you get what you pay for but they all look like they are from the same manufacturer. What SSR do ya'll use?

Normally, I just pay but man is electric brewing expensive. I have a budget in mind and if I don't pinch every penny I'll be over it in no time.

The fotek knock offs do work.. some people have gotten bad ones but the three I have have been working for over a year without issues.. the trigger voltage is 24v I believe not 12 but I could be wrong.

honestly though I would get one of these... they are actually 2 ssrs in one and a very well known brand.. they retail for over $100 so $15 shipped is a great deal.I have one and use it in my panel agong with a fotek (removed other two to make space for other additions.

Thanks for all the help.

There are a lot of sites that sell those fotec. I'm sure they work but I just didn't want to take a chance. I would have hated to burn up my control panel because I didn't spend 10 more dollars on a part.

Now I've got an idea on which companies to look for and a price range of 10-15 bucks.

Thanks again I'm sure I'll have 100 more questions as my build continues.

I had a ctydom, failed one day, maybe it was counterfeit. Replaced with Auber s

Aubers are actually rebranded ones from china... you can find them sold under their OEM manufacturers name brand on eBay for between $10-15 shipped...
Teledyne and crydom are some of the top brands as far as SSRs go but things can fail no matter what kind of quality they are...

Here is the same SSR auberins sells only not rebranded... comes with a heat sink for $12 shipped..
http://m.ebay.com/itm/111275978876?nav=SEARCH

Keep in mind the products auber sells are the same products from china sold on amazon or ebay.. They stock the stuff in the states since they are a distributer but you usually pay twice the price of more for this middle man service.

Why we are on the subject about auber how about their PIDs? I'm going to order three on monday. are they just rebranded? Is there a cheap but equal PID?

With respects to this discussion, this SSR is not recommended, since it is
for a DC load, not an AC load.

While you can get cheaper PID's on Ebay, I do not think you can beat Auber for support.
The PID's work as expected. If you have a problem, a simple call or email and they will take care of you.

The only problem I have with the Auber pid's is the lack of UL certification.
AutomationDirect has UL Certified PID's.

Ouch...them autodirect PIDs are 100 bones! I though the Aubers were expensive at 40 a pop! Any reason to get the UL Certified at 2.5 the price?

Depends on your needs. If you need to build it UL or not.
The SL4848 also allows serial access to the the controller.
Can use a PC to capture and log data. :)

Auber also, does not provide a serial interface.

YES,

All of aubers products are from china... there pids are the only thing they sell exclusively but as I recently learned they are also from china..

Here is the auber pids with original oem labeling... the model numbers are the same(the "MGR" stands for the real manufactuer "Mager") they just print new purple labels for auber to distribute them under their own name. To be fair auber only charges 250% the price with shipping but you get better "support" and faster delivery...

Notice the model numbers are the same here on aubers site,
http://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_30&products_id=30

http://www.ebay.com/itm/D4840-SSR-S...9&pid=100005&rk=2&rkt=6&sd=400661497478&rt=nc

the same rtd temp probes , led indicators and switches are also half the price or less from amazon or ebay.

I have used aubers on a past build with no issues. But I put together a control panel kit from ebrewsupply dot com and there support has been outstanding. They stand behind what they sell and I have had no issues with there ssrs. Honestly I have sent an email Sunday morning with a question when I was putting to get her my panel and he would sometimes respond Sunday afternoon. Don't really know which brand he uses but the 40 am ssrs are $12..

I picked up 3 of these TELEDYNE SD24R50 for $30. They are dual relays so it's like having 6 relays. These are supposed to retail around $150 a piece. You can tell the guy your a home brewer and make an offer and he'll work with you on the price.

Edit: I did have to lap the bottom of the ssr to make them comfortably flat against a heat sink, it was really easy to do. But as far as I know I'm the only one that actually bothered to do that, everyone has just used them as is.

And I see I'm too late. Oh well, good luck and have fun with your build. :mug:
