I tapped my keg of barleywine at room temp and I thought it tasted delicious and sweet at room temp. Then I cooled the beer down to like 40F and gave it a taste and its very different. It's not sweet when it's cold and it seems like the maltiness is very muted. Is this normal?

Yes, the best temp for your beer is the one you prefer it at. However, it would normally be served around cellar temp (~50 F).

I quite like craftbeer.com for looking up details on different beer styles and their suugested serving temps, glasses and profiles

A tad colder than cellar temp for me for anything like a barley wine or barrel aged beers. That way it can warm a bit as I enjoy it.
