what is ph 5.2 stabiliser?

a friend of mine was trying to argue that 5.2 buffer is a just a mixture of various brewing salts, i disagreed with this but i couldn't argue my point as i don't actually know what it is.surely a mixture of salts would behave unpredictably depending on the source water and do nothing to stabilise the ph.:confused:
 
It is a buffer. Simple as that. It overrides the (naturally weak) carbonate buffering system in drinking water to dial your mash pH to 5.2.
 
My guess is that it's a blend of potassium and ammonium phosphates which, as described above, act to buffer and stabilize the pH of the mash.
