Washed and boiled my balls...

My car is in the shop and husband bowls tonight, so settling in for a night of kitchen/fridge cleaning and finally kegging the Southern Passion Smash IPA I brewed 3 weeks ago. It's been cold crashing for the last 6 days because work and laziness, so it's about time. Might have lost some of the flavor/aroma from the dry hops from extended cold crash, but it smells great at least. This one was the husband's idea so I hope it turns out well. Also have to give my Holiday Ale keg a good long soak in hot oxyclean to get the spices out. And gloated over my latest lager that is 5 days old in the ferment fridge, still lots of yeast in suspension and smells terrific in there. Used harvested S-23 yeast in this one that were "expired" in 2016 and did great in their initial batch so looking forward to a nice traditional lager in a few weeks, nothing but Tettnanger hops for bittering and flavor.

*EDIT* For anyone who is thinking of trying the South African hops, I can definitely recommend the Southern Passion. Tastes fantastic, not overpoweringly of guava/passionfruit, just a nice residual sweetness with enough bitterness to keep it from being sickeningly sweet. Can't wait to see what it does on full carb.

Nothing yet today, but yesterday I picked up some drill bits, cutting oil, and step bits to drill a hole in my kettle for a valve. Also grabbed 10 gallons of RO water from the Walmart machine for the next brew day. Hoping to find a spot in the house to keep those that won't piss the wife off too much. Getting down to around 17* this weekend and really don't want 10 gallons of RO ice in the garage.

Ball valve meet previously holeless kettle. Between this and the new Fermonster w/spigot I should be able to get rid of my autosiphon that I've never really liked using. View attachment 607898
Fermonster w/ spigot is one of the best decisions I've made, equipment-wise. Visual check ups, easy sampling, easy cleaning, I love it! I have 3 of them, 7 gal, 6 gal, and 3 gal for test batches.

Nothing too exciting...but a simple thrill. Walked past the fermentation chamber, opened the lid, and took a long whiff of the brown ale bubbling inside. Can't. Wait.

And no, I'm not a Sharpie sniffer generally.

I handed out 20+ 22oz bottles of IPA to company workers, Tap House & and brewery workers, and random people (over 21). Feels so good to give to people and get a smile from people.

Kegged the Abbey Weizen I brewed a coupe of weeks ago. In the process of rearranging the contents of the kegerator to make room for a third keg the liquid out post on a keg of Dunkelweizen started leaking. The o-ring under the dip tube had split. I pulled that keg out of the fridge and removed the post. The poppet fell put in pieces. I had the correct o-ring but no spare poppets, so I took the post out of an empty keg and was back in business.

What was going to be a 15 minute job turned into an hour of mixing and matching parts. But, the fridge is full again. :ban:

WTF are they??
I'm using them as a heat blanket and as a dissolved oxygen barrier in my HLT & MLT.

They are hollow 20mm polypropylene balls. They good up to 230F. It's a pharmaceutical grade plastic. Got a 1000. However, 270 balls cover one square foot of surface area at 91% coverage in a hexagonal close pack formation. I have plenty to have multiple layers to improve the heat retention.

Primary benefit is the wort or water can remain covered while you insert a spoon or mash paddle to stir, or open the cooler lid.

I did the same thing on my hot liquor tank & brew kettle. I also added bulkhead temp probe.

12 years of brewing and I just did this now. Partly because I used to use the kettle for Turkey frying. Don't know why I waited.

Did it for safety, convenience and for underletting to my mash tun.

Pushed my ipa brew day to tomorrow so today did other things. Brewed up kombucha and my first try at beet kvass. Made up a WLP644 starter for the ipa and de-labeling bottles.

Also started a tequila tincture for my margarita gose. Two cups tequila one oz tangerine peel 2 oz lime peel and 1oz oak cubes. Will let it sit a week and soak then add it to the bottling bucket for packaging.

Rigged up an emergency temp controller for a previously out-of-commission freezer. It had a bad fan and tstat. My hop freezer went down. It was a nice chest freezer. I had roughly 30 lbs in it, along with 2 or 3 bags of ice. The ice melted, and floated/submerged my hop inventory. Lost about 4 lbs of galaxy, 2 lbs of Denali, 2 lbs of El Dorado, and quite a bit of miscellaneous whole cone. Even one of the unopened bags managed to get water in it. I am depressed.

There is nothing to say but I'm sorry, I feel for that loss!
