What happens when beer gets infected

I know that sanitation is a very big part of brewing and I am very careful about sanitation when I am around cooled wort but what negative effects result from an infected beer? Can you tell by looking at it?

Don't let the pics scare you.
Remember for the most part it's pretty hard to infect your brew.

Just remember to wash your hands and practice good sanitation.

HOLY CRAP! I looked at a few pictures and that turns my stomach! Everytime i saw another picture of infected beer i thought MAN DOWN MAN DOWN! Its disapointing and sad So much time and effort and have to start all over
