What did I do wrong?

So I thought I'd try to keep SWMBO happy and make up a keg of root beer. She's prego and has been on a big RB kick, and I thought it would be cool to have some on tap.

Here's what I did:


Put 3.5 gallons of water in a cornie keg
Added 1 bottle of Rainbow Root Beer Extract
Added 5 cups of sugar

Cooled the keg to 40*, then force carbed @ 30 psi.

I let the keg sit for about a week w/ the gas hooked up.

When I went to pour some out (from a cobra tap) the beer was still flat, and CLEAR!

Please help, as I really like the idea of having some sodas on tap.

Need some help ya'll. I'd really like to try this again, but don't know what I'm doing yet.

I may have misspoke, it had some carbonation, but was still kind of flat for a soda. My biggest concern is the fact that the whole thing was clear. Do I have to boil the water then add the extract? Like making an extract beer?

No. My soda is clear, too, once the sugar is dissolved.

Make sure you have long times (like 25 feet) to handle the 30 psi. If you're not getting carbed up at 30 psi, try going to 40 psi. I think David_42 said that's where he keeps his soda.

What's the fridge temp, by the way?
 
I'll try putting some longer line on the soda tap. If that doesn't work I'll try dialing up the pressure.

The fridge is 40*. That's the coldest it can get.
 
Yeah, I keep mine at 34F and 35 psi. I've seen Rainbow-based sodas go clear, no idea why. You'll need 20 ft of 3/16ths line to keep the fizz.
