I've come to find that I can keep my swamp cooler and ambient ~50* (+/- 3 degrees). Before, I was only managing ambient 64 or so, so I stuck with American and English ales of all sorts, and a belgian for fun. But now that I can dip a little lower I can introduce...

Hefeweizens
Scotch ales
Cream Ales

What else is there in this space between ale and lager? I don't intend to lager anytime soon, so I'm not looking to get a fridge. I could probably maintain an ambient as low as 45* F.

Kolsch

Look at what kinds of yeast prefer that temperature range. I'm mostly familiar with Wyeast and I know their strains like 1007, 2565, and 2112 fit into the area between lager and ale. White Labs probably has a few as well.

If you can get down to 45, you can lager.

Yup! Came to say Kolsch, and all of this is true too. Good luck, definitely easier to have the lower temps to deal with than higher, IMO.

You could also pick up a Brew Belt or something similar that gently warms the beer, and a temperature controller. That way you've got the best of both worlds!
