just got home from a stout tasting night with about 6 friends (3 pairs of couples). Every couple brought 2-3 cans/bottles/bombers for tasting. All were really good in their own right but always hard keeping a clean palate throughout. My favs were the millionaires stout (casita brewing) and Curtains II (the veil) which all had the best balance between barrel aged bourbon and the grain and/or adjunct flavors. Biggest surprise was the 5yr old Black Ops which was still very lively and rich with flavor.
The Answer: Dark Room (9.5%)
Two Blokes (Mt Pleasant, SC) - Putin the Terrible (9.5%) very nice RIS with an English style edge.
Two Surley's Darkness: one non BBA (2016) and one BBA (2017) - 12% each. Great mouthfeel on both but the BBA took away more than Id like from the cocoa/coffee notes I got from the non BBA one. Both very good though.
Brooklyn Black Ops - 2016. This one was better than expected as Ive had 3yr old ones before. Still very lively and not even close to "washed out" . Great rich flavor.
Casita Brewing: Millionaire's Stout: 12.5%, 1yr in Irish whiskey barrels and conditioned with hazelnuts, coffee, and vanilla beans. Great Balance, nice rich thick mouthfeel but not by any means a sweet pastry style.
Burial: (read label for the long obnoxious name lol): 15% with pecans, cocoa nibs, and vanilla beans. VERY thick and rich more in line with pastry style. Great with desert cookies but glad I just had a small tasting. Booze was minimal which was a shocker given the abv.
Dogfish Heat World wide stout - 16% - oak aged with vanilla. Definitely the booziest of the bunch. Its 2019 and definitely could use another 3-5 years to mellow. Good, but not the favorite of the bunch.
The Veil: Curtains II, 11%, collar with Hudson Valley. Lots of additional stuff: Pineapple puree, candied pineapple, coconut cream, flaked coconut, vanilla bean and honey. BBA (Buffalo Trace). This was one of my favs and I HATE COCONUT, but this had so much going on that I couldn't even detect it much at all and others couldn't either. Definitely thick (not too thick) and pineapple/honey/Bourbon dominated. It totally worked!
