It always has been a session beer. All traditional stouts are considered session beers. The porter is the big daddy to the stout. The name stout is a misnomer. It's not that stout compared to the porter.

Best splained via football.

Offensive line - Ales

Quarterback = Stout
Half Back = Extra Special bitter
Full Back = Porter/Robust Porter
Tite End = Brown ale
Wide Receiver = Mild Ale
Center = Barleywine/Quad/Triple
Guard = Scotch Strong Ale/Dubbel
Tackle = Old Ale/Strong Ale


Defensive line. - Lagers

End = Doppel Bock
Tackle = Triple Bock
Middle Linebacker = Maibock/Helles Bock
Linebacker = Traditional Bock
Corners = Pilsner/Weizenbock
Safety = Marzen/Oktoberfest
