Abigale. Water at the Drs. Happy Cinco!
Great news! off topic question. What software would be good for 2D layout? I have been put in charge of the laser cutter and previously the students have been using MS Visio. I feel they'd be better off if they use a CAD type program.
Ideally free, these are broke college students. I have seen several choices, but I am not going to download each and test drive them. I figured someone who deals with CAD on a daily basis could offer some advice.
Remmy any idea where I can get my hands on one of those ghandi bot glasses? I heard nebco is out
Well I'm sorry to say I do not have any experience with free programs. CAD is the best, in my opinion (go figure) but you're looking at a $4000 price tag for licensing. That being said...
After just a quick search, you might look into something like http://www.a9tech.com/. I can not vouch for how good it is or not, but the interface looks similar to AutoCAD which would be a nice start for students getting a feel for the industry. That A9CAD program also has the ability to save in .DWG and .DXF which is what we save our drawings in. It might be worth looking into.
Sorry I couldn't help more.
Thanks, I am downloading now. We have a few CAD and SW licenses, but we share those with Mechanical Engineering and someone always has them checked out. I am just looking for something that every student can have access to at any time.

Are we talking college?
You might want to check out http://www.autodesk.com/education/free-software/all, as far as I know... the Autodesk products are free for students.
I used CAD/Revit/Inventor for free throughout college. Not sure their definition of 'student' if you're talking high school or something else.
Germans have long been producing very good software, often for free or not expensive. I am nearly fluent in German, are you?

Students in Electrical and Computer Engineering is whom I deal with. I will look at that link.
Drinking my Rye Pale Ale. They cut power to do some building work so i might have to get out of the house. It's miserable in here.
Too bad keg setups don't need power.
If I remember correctly, all it took was a little information from each student... university and graduation date. Once verified, they give the student a license key that expires upon graduation.
If this fits your situation, this is the way to go.
That was easy, just signed up, stated I was a student and gave my University email. Bingo 3 year license. Thanks for the information!
You got it dude. Give your students my contact info. I'll do their CAD homework on the cheap.
Neither does a cask. But it's a sticky 90F in here right now. I should have milked the clock longer at work and stayed in an air conditioned car.
Finishing my last English Cider. Moving on to my last Belgian IPA.
You had to stiff me with the "work" stuff, didn't ya? ****, I need a job.
I kicked the keg of nitro ESB. Having a water before I start hitting the tequila and possibly having another baby. Buzzed pretty good.

That moment you know you're white trash but can't admit it.
Tequila time with lemonade.
