I used to only get mad when I drank. Thankfully that mostly stopped after college binge drinking stopped.

Work these days is trying to change that (the getting mad part, not the binge drinking).

gypsum adds hardness, calcium chloride lowers pH, calcium carbonate raises pH.

Calcium chloride does not drop the pH. pH measured H+ ions. CaCl2 does not add any to the system. You need am acid like lactic acid to drop the pH.

Yeah, they get real big but are generally good to have around to take care of other bugs. Not like out here where everything outside is venomous and out to make you suffer. I've been hit twice by bark scorpions and that's a real treat
