My thirst for Pilsner knows no boundaries! Today we head out to the Left Coast and slug down a California-size can of Scrimshaw “Pilsner-Style Beer,” 19.2 ounces!
Scrimshaw is a product of North Coast Brewing, heck it’s even an “®” registered trademark! Now that’s having faith in being around a while, anyone familiar with that process knows it can be a wait, sometimes years. A lot of brewers are out of business by the time the trademark comes through! Not North Coast though, they have been a foundational Northern California brewer for quite some time and have a slate of very well known beers, Old Rasputin and Apex notably.
Any time I see the word “-style” in combination with a name my antennas go up, not knowing what I’m heading into. Nothing to fear, this is a terrific Pilsner Lager. Nice head, great lacing - ABV nowhere to be seen on the can, but I see one thing of real interest – “Water, Malted Barley, Hops, Yeast and That’s All”. Well, assuming “That’s All” means “nothing else” and not some trademark for Rice solids or something, I think we quite possibly might have a genuine Reinheitsgebot Pilsner! Brewed in San Jose!
Grab one of these Tall-Boys the next time you are in a “Pilsner-Style” mood, you’ll like it!
