You don't F with the Rasputin!
JesusQuintana.jpg

I used to go to this really nice restaurant. It was in the basement of this old 1800's bank on the coast. Huge granite blocks. It was like a bunker. It had an incredible.beer list and Old Rasputin was on it. I started to drink it and I could tell it was aged. The waitress noticed my reaction and said "I don't get it. No one orders that. Only the owner drinks that and he has cases of it stored in the vault"

I LOVED that spot!!!

There was a bit of chatter on this thread recently about how this beer might be too bitter. I can see where that comes from, but there’s also something so appropriate about it. This beer f*cks.
I always felt it was a sharp/harsh roastiness. Could be the high level of bitterness too?
It's been a few years since I have had it though.

North Coast IMHO is still holding it down. I can’t think of another brewery (at least one that distributes near me) that puts out a flagship imperial stout that isn’t barrel-aged and/or based on a breakfast cereal. Not to mention Brother Thelonelious, Pranqster, Scrimshaw, and Old Stock. Doing Pilsner before it was cool. And still rockin’ two Belgians. Respect.

I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying it on nitro a few times, and I must admit it really shines in that format. But there is something about the aggressive nature of that beer that just works for me. I’m not usually one to fetishize hardship or struggle in a beverage, but my chest hair does feel a bit thicker every time I drink one.

That's a good point nitro does have a way with smoothing out dark beers. I'll keep an eye out for it. I might pick up a pack of it to give it another shot.

Well it's been a s**t weekend, Friday night we had a storm come through, 1am sounded like hell in my yard. We lost about 20 trees just in the yard, power just came back on a little bit ago. Luckily, other then the chicken coop and some smaller things no major damage. House and cars and people and animals all good.. I got my work cut out for me now, been running the chainsaw since 6am yesterday morning, with a few brakes of course, helped the neighbors too, and we got some help as well, but this is gonna be months of cleanup and recovery.... I need a tractor haha..

Canadian smoke hitting here? Time for a beer and a swim. Wife and 10yr old grandson (this will be his 1st ever airplane trip, he's got multiple disabilities) are going to Oregon in 2 days for a visit with our son on the coast. Pretty sure the teen granddaughter will ignore me (except for rides!) so, Bachelor Time?!?

My homebrewed Hoppy black lager. This is pretty darn good. Really interesting.

Does whatever you used to make it dark interfere, or mesh, with those hops?

Duck Dude needs consultation after the Husker BB beat down today. Okay little buddy, this Tripel is for you!

The Canadian smoke was at a lull today, so took advantage and worked on the landscaping a bit. Just called it for the day. A fine day for a Duvel. (But then, isn't every day?)

Nice day in low-80s today. Tomorrow brings 90s, humidity and wildfire smoke. Then 60s and rain Tuesday. On the rollercoaster we go.

Brew day Tues, doing an imperial stout, close to @Hoochin'Fool's recipe.

As much great brew is coming out of the San Diego area, sometimes I need to turn my attention elsewhere. I’ve had a hankering for a Maßkrug full of delicious Vienna Lager all day!

Why, Oh Why is it that in order to find a good Vienna Lager I need to look South of the Border? Victoria is one of the few remaining Vienna beers being made on this or that side of the Atlantic!

I’ve drank Victoria here before, notably when I was surveying the available Mexican beers we have here in Southern California. Victoria is a 4% ABV thirst quencher brewed by Cerveceria Modello in Nava, Mexico.

Drinkers of all sorts – let’s appreciate this beer and not look a gift horse in the mouth! Where else are you going to find a Vienna Lager these days? Certainly not Vienna!!! Go out and buy a few cans the next time you are stocking up, we need to keep this lifeline in operation, and the beers a-flowing! Prost!

It actually works well. The coconut from the Sabro seems to bridge all gaps. I think it’s because coconut is a familiar note with dark beers. Taste like a dark lager with a bright citrus and coconut character and finishes with bitter sweet chocolate

If anyone can put that all together, I know you can. Maybe in retirement, I'll be visiting your "Brewery", it's on a list! Haha!

So being buoyant in a pool feels good. But being, you know, 90% muscle, I need help. The more liquid, the more buoyant. Ergo, beer is for the healing process. šŸ˜

It’s a throwback that I love. I sort of miss beers that were unapologetic like this. Sort of an ā€œI’m not for eveyoneā€ vibe that has kind of disappeared.
I hear you, I miss the mean, surly little 1.057-1.060 IPAs of the early '90s. They were fantastically vulgar statements by their brewers: "Yeah, we got hops and we're not afraid to use them."

I'm slumming again and guzzling fermenter dregs. I kegged the hefe that I brewed last weekend. It was my first use of Lallemand Munich Classic and I'm really impressed. This is what I like in a hefe, a bit of banana, a hint of bubblegum, and restrained phenolics. Everything is there, but it's not in your face. I also attempted to run this one as a true open fermentation, at least until the yeast spilled out of the fermenter and made a mess of my ale fermentation fridge. Ugh. Prior to that, it did manage to shave off half the gravity, so I think the open fermentation may have helped. At any rate, I'm quite pleased. I'll happily use Munich Classic again, although I'll need to give some thought to creating a vessel to catch the fermentation overflow.

Here it is in its flat and warm glory.

Strangely enough that makes sense. I either drank too much, or not enough.
I'm always for not enough. But I only stayed at a Holiday Inn...

So much for the growler....

Admittedly glanced through your post initially. This is no joke. Really awful as I've gone through some similar things but in the winter, of all things in Central Texas. We should all appreciate your struggles. Please, really, PM me an address and favorite style. You need some goodies!
